Newcastle’s biggest New Year’s Eve party returns to the Quayside

Newcastle’s biggest New Year’s Eve celebration returns

Tickets are now on sale for Newcastle’s biggest New Year’s Eve celebration, with Howaymanay set to bring the city’s Quayside to life as thousands come together to see in 2027.

On Thursday 31 December, the Tyne will once again become the backdrop for a huge night of live music, entertainment, food, drink and fireworks, with Howaymanay returning following the success of its first year.

Last year, thousands packed Newcastle’s Quayside for the inaugural celebration, with the event selling out and establishing Howaymanay as the North East’s biggest and most talked-about New Year’s Eve celebration.

Two stages, live entertainment and a midnight spectacular

This year, it’s back! From 8.30pm, the Quayside will become a ticket-only party playground, with two stages of live music, roaming performers, street entertainment, bars and food operators, building towards one very big moment at midnight.

Then, as 2026 comes to an end, the Tyne will take centre stage as a spectacular firework display lights up the Newcastle skyline, welcoming in 2027 in style in the region’s capital.

Newcastle has a cultural offer to be proud of, and after a fantastic and hugely successful first year, we’re delighted to see Howaymanay return for its second year.

Cllr Rob Austin, Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Youth Services at Newcastle City Council,

Cllr Rob Austin added, “Our festive celebrations attract people from across the region and beyond, and we want to offer local people as well as the visitors we welcome a quality event and entertaining evening for everyone to enjoy. We’re continuing to build on the success of the first year and improve the event year on year, helping to put Newcastle firmly on the map as a fantastic place to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

“Bringing thousands of people together on our iconic Quayside, with live music, entertainment and a spectacular midnight fireworks display, will be a fantastic way to celebrate the end of the year and welcome in 2027

“It’s also important that families can be part of the celebrations, which is why we’re pleased to be keeping the free 6pm fireworks, giving families the chance to enjoy a spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration together earlier in the evening.”

The ambition is simple: Newcastle deserves a New Year’s Eve celebration to match the city – and Howaymanay is bringing the party to the Quayside, creating a major city-centre celebration to rival Edinburgh’s Hogmanay.

Howaymanay is part of Newcastle’s Christmas, delivered and funded by Newcastle City Council and Newcastle NE1, and is designed to bring people together to celebrate the end of the year in one of the city’s most iconic locations.

Newcastle’s iconic Quayside provides the perfect backdrop to celebrate the end of 2026 and welcome in the New Year and 2027 in style.

Stephen Patterson, Chief Executive of NE1 Ltd

Stephen Patterson added, "Thousands of enthusiastic New Year’s Eve revellers made last year’s sell-out Howaymanay celebrations an amazing night to remember, and we’re delighted to bring it back again this year with more live music, street entertainment and of course, fantastic midnight fireworks.

With the earlier free family-focused celebrations, there is something for everyone to enjoy, and the event cements Newcastle’s position as one of the top cities in the UK for New Year’s Eve celebrations.”

Everything you need for New Year’s Eve

The main Howaymanay event runs from 8.30pm until 12.15am. The ticketed event is suitable for ages eight and over, with under-16s required to be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets cost £8 plus booking fee, with capacity limited. With last year’s event selling out in mid-December, visitors are being encouraged to book early to avoid missing out.

Once inside, there will be bars and food operators across the event site, alongside the live music, entertainment and activities, giving visitors plenty of options throughout the night.

The ticketed event will have three separate entrances – at Sandhill/Guildhall, King Street and East Quayside/Millennium Bridge. Visitors will need to enter through the entrance selected when booking.
