Craft and culture bonanza at after-hours event for adults at Discovery Museum this September
Discovery Museum’s after-hours event Discovery Nights returns with Made at the Museum on Friday 25 September from 6pm - 9pm.
Discovery Nights is a child free, licensed event where people can explore the museum at night dipping in and out of taster activities and exploring the galleries.
This event’s theme of Made at the Museum brings a host of hands-on craft and cultural activities for people to try while socialising.
From trying Japanese calligraphy and phrases with Newcastle University's Japan Foundation, to bobbin lace making with Northumbrian Lacemakers, Gelli plate printing and musical bingo to exploring archive material there is plenty on offer - all with a licensed bar and food available, and a live folk music performance by duo Coled Lore at 8.30pm.

With Discovery Nights we've created a space in the museum calendar for adults to catch up with others, roam solo if they prefer, try new things, and have an alternative night out to potter, craft or just have a laugh with friends, while experiencing something a little bit different
Activities on offer throughout the event include:
- Live music from Newcastle's teen folk sensations, guitar and fiddle duo Coled Lore (8.30pm)
- Try a ‘red list’ heritage craft - bobbin lacemaking with Northumbria Lacemakers
- Try Japanese calligraphy, origami and learn a few Japanese phrases with the Japan Foundation from Newcastle University
- Victorian fashion - make braided soutache dress embellishments
- Explore material from Tyne & Wear Archives
- Musical Bingo in the cafe
- Explore and try sustainable gift wrapping
- Try Gelli plate printmaking using acrylics
- Get stuck into collage badge making
Each Discovery Nights event has a different theme – the theme coming up in February is a Valentine/Galentine event.
Advance booking is recommended for Discovery Nights. The museum fascia is eclipsed by scaffolding due to restoration works on the Grade II listed building, but the museum is operational as usual.
We recommend visitors traveling by car to allocate enough parking time, as Blandford Square parking has been affected by ongoing building works. The Waterloo St Car Park is only a two-minute walk from Discovery Museum.
Discovery Museum is just a few minutes’ walk from Central Station in Newcastle. It is open weekdays 10am – 4pm, weekends 11am – 4pm and closed on Bank Holidays. It is always free entry, although donations are welcome.
