Hotel owners behind Jesmond Dene House expand Lake District portfolio with £8m acquisition

The owners of Jesmond Dene House are continuing their expansion across the North of England with the £8 million acquisition of Keswick Country House Hotel.

The hotel group behind Jesmond Dene House in Newcastle has announced the acquisition of Keswick Country House Hotel, marking the latest stage in its plans to build a collection of distinctive independent hotels in some of the North's most sought-after leisure destinations.

The 73-bedroom hotel, set within five acres of grounds in the heart of Keswick and overlooking the fells towards Skiddaw, becomes the fifth property within The Kronen Collection.

The group already owns Jesmond Dene House in Newcastle, Borrowdale Gates Hotel in Keswick, The Crown Hotel in Wetheral and The Kilbirnie Hotel in Newquay.

For the owners, the acquisition represents a significant investment in another established hotel, while continuing an approach they have already taken with properties across their collection – investing in their future while retaining the individual character and heritage that makes each hotel distinctive.

Keswick Country House Hotel will now undergo a comprehensive refurbishment programme, with plans to elevate the property to a leading four-star hotel. Investment will extend across the bedrooms, public spaces and guest facilities, creating a new chapter for one of Keswick's best-known hotels.

The acquisition builds on the group's investment in Jesmond Dene House, the distinctive Arts & Crafts mansion in Newcastle which joined The Kronen Collection in October 2023, followed by Borrowdale Gates Hotel in 2025.

The addition of Keswick Country House Hotel also gives the group two hotels in Keswick, creating an increasingly strong presence in Cumbria while connecting its Newcastle and Lake District properties.

A growing North East hotel business

The expansion reflects the owners' ambition to develop a collection of hotels with strong individual identities, rather than a standardised chain.

Jesmond Dene House remains at the heart of the collection in Newcastle. The Arts & Crafts mansion, set within Jesmond Dene, provides the group with an established base in the North East, while its growing portfolio now stretches from Newcastle and Cumbria to the Cornish coast.

The acquisition of Keswick Country House Hotel follows significant investment across the existing collection and represents another long-term commitment to the hospitality sector.

Christina Stephenson, Group Sales & Marketing Manager at The Kronen Collection, said the acquisition represented an exciting opportunity for the group.

We are incredibly excited to welcome Keswick Country House Hotel to The Kronen Collection. It is a stunning property in an exceptional location, and we believe it has enormous potential.

Christina Stephenson added, “To have the opportunity to take on a hotel with such a strong history and such an important place within Keswick is a real privilege. As custodians of the property, we want to respect what has gone before while investing in its future.

“We have already seen the potential that investment can unlock across our existing hotels, including Jesmond Dene House in Newcastle and we see a fantastic opportunity to reposition Keswick Country House Hotel through a comprehensive refurbishment programme and establish it as a leading four-star hotel in Keswick, while celebrating the character, heritage and incredible setting of the property.”

Bringing new life to Keswick's former railway station

The acquisition also includes the historic former Keswick railway station, which sits alongside the popular Keswick to Threlkeld walking and cycling route.

The Kronen Collection plans to transform the former station into a café, giving the historic building a new purpose and creating a destination for walkers, cyclists, local residents, hotel guests and visitors to Keswick.

The plans reflect the group's wider approach to its properties – recognising the history and character of each location while looking at how investment can bring new life and new opportunities for the future.

For Keswick Country House Hotel, that means a comprehensive refurbishment and a new position within The Kronen Collection.

The Kronen Collection now spans five distinctive hotels across Newcastle, Cumbria and Cornwall, bringing together city charm, Lakeland escapes and coastal retreats under one collection.
